Your blueprint to data center fire protection

This 3-part series delves into fire protection strategies for data centers, addressing fire detection, control, suppression and extinguishing approaches, with industry best practices.

The sessions explore the risks associated with fire incidents, mitigation and intervention techniques, and tailored solutions to ensure operational safety and resilience. Key topics include fire detection, advanced suppression technologies, incident management, stakeholder considerations, and industry standards.

Insights

Fire remains one of the most persistent threats to data center continuity—and as these facilities grow in complexity, so must the strategies that protect them. Johnson Controls brings decades of experience, from legacy server rooms to today’s high-density, high-resilience environments. These insights explore how modern fire protection can meet the demands of uptime, speed, and scale.

White paper: Fire protection of data centers ¨C economic and environmental considerations

This paper provides an overview of the most common available fire suppression technologies for the protection of data centers. It dives into comparing the relative merits and environmental influences to help select the right system for an application.

The most complete fire protection portfolio

The industry¡¯s broadest range of fire protection solutions

Explore this overview of the ¾Ã¾ÃÊÓƵ portfolio of fire suppression systems ideal for data center protection.

Traditional preaction sprinkler systems and advanced water mist systems are two key fire suppression methods used in data centers. Sprinkler systems provide broad water coverage and are typically used as a last resort to control large fires. Preaction systems mitigate the risk of accidental water discharge on sensitive equipment. Water mist systems use fine water droplets to suppress fires effectively while minimizing water damage to sensitive electronics.

Gaseous systems are sometimes used instead of sprinkler systems, to provide fire protection while removing the risk of water damage. Gaseous systems may also be used as a layer of defense, in addition to a sprinkler system. ¾Ã¾ÃÊÓƵ offers both inert and halocarbon gaseous systems and can work with you to determine the ideal solution to fit your needs.

Clean agent fire extinguishers are designed for the protection of facilities containing sensitive equipment that could be damaged or destroyed by water, foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Electronically nonconductive, leaving no residue, requiring no cleanup after discharge and rated for Class A, B, and C fires, CLEANGUARD+ extinguishers are ideal for data centers and data storage facilities.
